05HC
COVID-19 highlighted how fragile us and our environment are, needing a fundamental shift in design concept and use of space.
5HC is a newly renovated apartment in Holland Village reinterpreted for a couple’s post-pandemic use. The project used environmentally responsible materials to create a sense of luxury and that good design goes beyond expensive materials.
The apartment is modestly sized and the key concept was to utilize space effectively while creating a sense of openness. It aims to create a flexible environment but calm yet energizing, with multiple functions and pockets of private space. This was achieved through an open-plan layout with nodes, working with existing structure to free up the space.
The design centered around the dining space: the heart of the home. Custom cabinetry supports the flexible use of the dining table and connects it to the rest of the apartment. The design emphasizes a juxtaposition of clean lines with high-quality materials and plays on transparency and opacity. Simple touches accentuated the spaces and facilitated everyday living, making spaces efficient without clutter.
Warm lighting in conjunction with simple design created a sense of hierarchy in spaces, bringing clarity, comfort, and a soothing environment for the inhabitants to unwind. The apartment design reflects a shift towards the critical use of materials and how they interact with spatial layout and the environment to achieve a shift in use of space.
Overall, 5HC is an apartment that effectively utilizes space to create openness and flexibility, while keeping it calm and energizing for the inhabitants. The use of environmentally responsible materials and simple, carefully selected elements adds a sense of luxury to the space. Warm lighting and minimal design create a soothing atmosphere. The result is a well-informed and high-quality design that proves good design is not just about using expensive materials.
