Call For Entries: The Architect’s Chair

The Architect’s Chair Competition, a ground-breaking contest in custom furniture design, invites architects and designers from around the world to create their own signature chair, showcasing their creativity and versatility. Drawing inspiration from iconic architects like Charles and Ray Eames, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and Arne Jacobsen, participants have the opportunity to contribute to the rich tradition of designing custom chairs that embody their distinct design philosophies and vision.

 

The Competition

The Architect’s Chair Competition seeks to engage and challenge contemporary architects, designers, and creative minds to create their own signature chair. Participants are invited to explore new materials, construction techniques, and ergonomic solutions, as well as push the boundaries of design, aesthetics, and functionality. The submitted designs will reflect the participants’ unique approaches and perspectives and inspire a new generation of architects and designers to explore the relationship between architecture and objects.

 

Project Proposal Requirements

Functionality and Comfort

Design a chair that prioritizes ergonomic considerations, ensuring comfort for users while accommodating diverse body types and seating preferences.

Aesthetics and Signature Style

Develop a visually striking and unique design that embodies the architect’s personal style, making the chair an iconic representation of their design philosophy.

Material Exploration

Experiment with various materials, considering their durability, sustainability, and potential for innovative applications in the chair’s design.

Craftsmanship and Construction

Propose a chair with attention to detail, quality, and precision in construction, showcasing exemplary craftsmanship and assembly techniques.

Versatility and Adaptability

Create a chair design that can seamlessly fit into various spaces and settings, while maintaining its distinct identity and design integrity.

 

Prizes

  • Monetary Awards

3 winning proposals, and 6 honourable mentions will be selected. Buildner will award a total of EUR5,000 in prize money to competition winners.

  • Publicity campaign

“Seen by” one million, “Seen by” 800 000 more, Interview, Movie, Media partners

  • Certificates

Buildner will acknowledge the outstanding performance of all winners and honourable mentions with Certificates of Achievement.

 

Important Dates

Preliminary Registration Deadlines

Early Bird Registration: May 1 – June 6

Advance Registration: June 7 – September 6

Last Minute Registration: September 7 – November 1

It is still possible to participate in this competition after the preliminary deadlines, however, a higher late registration fee will be charged.

Closing date for submission: December 5, 2023 (11:59 p.m. London Time)

Announcement of the winners: February 13, 2024

 

Eligibility

The competition is open to all. No professional qualifications are required. Design proposals can be developed individually or by teams (4 team members maximum).

People who have direct personal or professional relationships with jury panel members or organisers may not participate in this competition.
