Singapore Designers Spark Sustainable Movement at Milan Design Week

March 27, 2024

DesignSingapore Council returns to Milan Design Week 2024 with Future Impact 2 at La Rotonda del Pellegrini from 15 – 21 April 2024. Curated by Tony Chambers and Maria Cristina Didero, the showcase will present newly commissioned work by Singapore’s most innovative and trailblazing designers that demonstrate how design can evolve to create a sustainable future.

As technology continues to permeate everyday life, Future Impact 2 considers how designers can be empowered to maximise its capabilities and generate positive, impactful design solutions, in response to the urgent need to preserve our planet and enhance the functionality of design for a better tomorrow.

Designers will push the boundaries of their creative practices and create forward-thinking designs that address pressing global challenges, minimise environmental impact, and reimagine production methods. From breathing new life into discarded offcuts, to harnessing the
potential of artificial intelligence, generative tools and 3D printing, the new works will reflect Singapore’s distinctive vision for design.

Co-curator of Future Impact 2, Tony Chambers shared, “The creative talents emerging from Singapore never cease to amaze and inspire us, so it’s a joy once again to shine a light on them in Milan during Salone del Mobile – the global stage of design innovation”

“We are honoured to present a second iteration of Future Impact at this year’s Design Week in Milan. Building upon the resounding success of last year and fuelled by the unwavering dedication of our designers, we proudly showcase Singapore’s excellence once again. Through this exhibition, designers unveil the transformative potential of technology, marking a pivotal moment in design innovation, but also pure talent and creativity, in the unique frame of a historical Milan landmark such as the Rotonda del Pellegrini,” said Maria Cristina Didero, co-curator of Future Impact 2.

“Design remains essential to the future of emerging technology and sustainability. We are thrilled to present Future Impact again this year, expanding on the last edition to take these topics further through a Singapore design lens. As a prototyping city that incorporates innovation as part of its design approach, I believe these fresh works will resonate with audiences and spur their own thinking on new possibilities for the future of design and its impact,” said Dawn Lim, Executive Director of DesignSingapore Council.

The participating designers are: Christian+Jade, David Lee, Faezah Shaharuddin, Genevieve Ang and Interactive Materials Lab, and Zavier Wong. Following their participation in the inaugural edition of Future Impact during Milan Design Week 2023, Gabriel Tan and Tiffany Loy will return with new ideas that reflect the latest developments in their practice.

Future Impact 2 will be exhibited at the historic La Rotonda Del Pellegrini, located a short walk from the Piazza Duomo, with exhibition design by multidisciplinary studio DWA – Design Studio. Originally built in 1573, the Renaissance style building has been deliberately selected as the site of Future Impact 2 to highlight a convergence of past and future. It also marks the first time that the Rotonda will host an exhibition on the occasion of Milan Design Week.

Future Impact 2 builds on the success of the inaugural Future Impact showcase during Milan Design Week 2023. Presented by DesignSingapore Council, Singapore’s national agency for design, the exhibition spotlights the city-state’s design talents on the global stage and its unique position as a leading hub where impactful and forward-looking design intertwines with technology to shape a brighter future.
