Oriental Zen for Guangdong’s Restaurant

August 18, 2022

Designed by JG Phoenix, Late Night Kitchen is a restaurant designed with nostalgic sentiments. Red, considered an auspicious colour in traditional Chinese culture, carries cultural symbolism and spiritual feelings. At the entrance, a bronze screen catches the eye with its retro red hue, and it is also the start point of a winding circulation route leading to the tranquil interior space.

At the foyer, the design team brought in natural stones to create scenes, and applied materials of gold and silver colours generously to the space. Red walls set the tone for the restaurant, dressed to convey a traditional Chinese style. Wood textures that carry the traces of time are also incorporated into the foyer.

Inside, diners will encounter another stone landscape inspired by traditional Chinese gardens. Natural stone textures, abundant detailing and appropriate spatial rhythm form an orderly and rich space.

The overall space is highlighted by screen partitions clad in gold and silver foil to give the interior an exquisite touch. Each scene in the space is based on meticulous consideration of points, lines and planes. Appearing like a maze, the space breaks the conventional layout and settings.

Elegant red cabinets, pottery pots and ornate wall lamps reveal classical aesthetics, romance, elegance and warmth. Wood carvings carrying cultural heritage, at the same time exhibiting a calming, tranquil ambience when placed together with Zen artworks.

The design team created a landscape scene beside the window, which calls to mind traditional Chinese gardens and echoes the natural scenery outdoors. Adding to the oriental zen atmosphere, retro furniture pieces and modern textures are elegantly laid.

Chinese-style round tables are brought into private dining rooms. Symbolising reunions, round tables allow diners to come together to chat and dine more intimately.

Under the moonlight-like lighting environment, the space invites diners to put their worries and pressure aside, to immerse themselves in tranquility.
