Wood & Col Design and Construction revamped a semi-detached house, Courtyard House 39, in Bayan Lepas, Penang to correspond with the trending raw and modern concept. The design theme plays with natural lighting, time, materials, landscape, architecture, and space to create a harmonious interaction. The artfully positioned openings bring in natural cross ventilation throughout the living space.

The space opens up the living room with matte marble tiles that appeal to the purity of white. An oak coffee table brings in the raw and modern atmosphere, emphasising the brown leather sofas. The utilisation of vent blocks in the ceiling and walls creates an edge effect while providing natural ventilation. A dark wood cabinet serves as an imposing and dominating divider between the living room area and a raw concrete platform with a red brick wall.

The cleverly built natural skylight fills the area differently throughout the year, depending on the sun’s continually shifting position. This phenomenon can be seen from the open-space dining area. The dining area is filled with raw wood-inspired furnishings with lighting from modern chandelier and natural lighting from the pocket garden.
This feature creates a sense of continuity by integrating the inner area with its surroundings. It also highlights the beneficial impact that a garden can have on a home for discretion. Behind the dining table are black and white wood panels leading into a secret garden.

The design team hopes this open-space concept can encourage interaction between family members and push down boundaries between spaces.
