Singapore Launches Accreditation Scheme for Interior Designers

November 23, 2021

The Singapore Interior Design Accreditation Scheme (SIDAS) was officially launched last Friday. Officiated by Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Low Yen Ling, at the National Design Centre, the accreditation scheme provides a framework to regulate Singapore’s interior design industry. Launched by the Society of Interior Designers, Singapore (SIDS), the scheme also provides opportunities for existing practitioners to upskill.

Lauding the launch of Singapore’s first accreditation scheme for interior designers, Low said, “Through this accreditation scheme, interior design practitioners can look forward to greater recognition of their professionalism, hard work and excellence. In turn, clients can be assured of the skills, expertise and professionalism of the interior designers they engage.”

“This will strengthen their confidence and give them greater clarity on the services of accredited designers. With the programme in place, the public will be able to access a full list of accredited interior designers. This will help them make better and informed choices when they engage interior design services.”

Under the scheme, interior designers will be classified into three categories: Interior Design Practitioner Class 1, 2 and 3. Criteria for assessment will be based on an interior designer’s relevant academic qualifications and experience. The scheme focuses on four key competencies, namely professional practice, building regulations, project and contract management, as well as design and technology. It will be overseen by the Singapore Interior Design Accreditation Committee (SIDAC), comprising key stakeholders such as government agencies, trade associations, industry practitioners, institutes of higher learning and SIDS members.

To promote lifelong learning, SIDAS also offers regular upskilling for practitioners. Through various Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes, accredited interior designers can hone their skills and deepen their knowledge essential for continued growth in the industry. SIDAS will also partner with institutes of higher learning to roll out other lifelong learning opportunities.

Stressing the importance of an accreditation scheme for the future of interior designers in Singapore, Prof. Keat Ong, president of SIDS, said, “I see it as a game-changer for the entire interior design ecosystem, benefitting interior design practitioners, and consumers alike.”

“The new accreditation programme will help to uplift the image and professionalism of interior designers and the industry. With a proper system of accreditation in place, potential clients can be better assured of the quality and expertise of qualified interior designers.”
