Xiamen’s Bay of Modern Art

June 1, 2022

Designed by Steve Leung Design Group, Bay of Modern Art sits along the coast of WuYuan Bay, Xiamen, inspired by the Loukah Hotel. A secluded sanctuary in a busy city, the leading design team at SLD was motivated to infuse three themes into the design of the interior – tranquility, meditation and cultivation.

Upon passing through the entrance, one is greeted by the Meditation Hall. Here, a large surface of the ground is paved with black stone, whereas the walls and ceiling are covered with beige-grey wood veneer that seals a natural and peaceful style for the project. Four orderly wooden grille screens are positioned in front of the curtain wall to allow the sunlight to softly cast on the black floor through the gaps of the screens. The brightness and darkness that changes with the weather and time allow people to feel at ease and one with nature. have returned to nature.

A picture of tranquil, the Tea Tasting Room uses beige-grey wood veneer on the large surface and black stone in the middle of the display cabinet as a contrast. Furniture from B&B Italia, a renowned Italian brand, was carefully chosen for its simple and elegant touches, which have perfectly integrated Eastern culture into a modern Western minimalistic design. From the window, one is offered a scenic view of the outside.

A hollow space in the sitting area, designed with generous floor-to-ceiling windows, brings in sunlight and the outdoor. In the dining room, a dramatic white ceiling stands out. A round-shaped wood veneer in the middle of the ceiling echoes the 10-person dining table sitting beneath, dressed with ornate chandeliers that lend elegance and flair to the space. The hollow staircase, erected next to the guest dining room, and the floor-to-ceiling windows on the side are suitably separated from the outdoor light by a wooden grille screen set up to enhance the privacy of the space.

In the master bedroom, seamless designs reign. While the platform and the walls are made of white magnolia marble, the texture of natural marble on the walls adds vibrancy and vitality to the space through the cutting and splicing of different sized marble pieces. The bathtub, made of one single piece of stone, has an even more ingenious design. Through meticulous design, it perfectly merges with the floor like a one-piece installation, resembling a beautifully craved art staging at the center of the bathroom. Staying true to the themes of tranquility, meditation and cultivation, this home offers escape from the business of city living.
